Tarzan is a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. He was originally the baby son of John and Mary Greystoke, two British explorers. After their ship sank, they were marooned in the jungles of Africa. The savage gorilla Kerchak killed them, but the benevolent gorilla Kala saved the baby and raised him as her own. Thus, Tarzan grew up to become the defender of the African jungle, protecting it from all evil. An African shaman casted a spell on him that gave him invulnerability and the ability to summon any land animal in the world by emitting his famous yell.
