Years later, Gandalf entrusted him with the task of tossing the Ring into ther fires of Mount Doom, which was the only way to destroy it and vanquish Sauron. Bilbo had to deal not only with the temptation of the Ring, but with Gollum's attempt to steal the Ring from him. When he finally reached Mount Doom, he was unable to destroy the Ring. Gollum took this oppportunity to steal the Ring from Frodo once and for all, but Gollum was so happy to finally have the Ring back that he accidentally fell off tbedge of Mount Doom with the Ring stoll on him and into the fire below, destroying the Ring anyway. After that, Frodo chose to travel around Middle Earth with Gandalf.
